Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs had just a bit more than the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the first inning on Monday. The Rattlers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Chiefs answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. There wasn't much offense the rest of the day as the Chiefs won 5-2 to take three out of four games from the Rattlers.
Maximo Mendez gave Wisconsin (21-26) the lead on the first pitch of the game. The Rattler centerfielder launched a leadoff home run to right off Billy Muldowney. It was the first homer of the year for Mendez. Wisconsin got an RBI double from Alex Liddi later in the first for a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin starting pitcher Edward Paredes took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his last start. But, he struggled to get out of the first inning on Sunday. Nate Samson singled to start the Peoria half of the first. Then, Josh Donaldson homered to tie the game 2-2 for the Chiefs (20-31).
The next three Peoria batters reached on a double, a single, and a walk to load the bases. Dylan Johnston followed with a single to center that drove in two runs for a 4-2 Peoria lead.
Both pitchers settled in after the first inning. Muldowney would not give up another hit over the next four innings. Paredes exited after allowing a lead off single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Chiefs added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out solo home run by Brandon Guyer off Walter Suriel.
The Rattlers had a couple of chances late in the game. In the top of the seventh, when the score was still 4-2, Wisconsin had runners at first and second with one out against Peoria reliever Todd Blackford. But, the next batter grounded into an inning ending double play. In the eighth, after Guyer's homer made the score 5-2, Mendez reached on a single to start the frame. But, the Chiefs turned a tricky 3-6-1 double play and Blackford got the final out of the inning.
Audy Santana entered in the ninth and worked a perfect frame for his first save.
Wisconsin is 2-6 in the first eight games of their current 12-game road trip.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday, then resume their odyssey on Wednesday with the first game of a four game series at Kane County. Nathan Adcock (1-3, 3.47) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Scott Hodsdon (2-4, 3.80) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time at Elfstrom Stadium is 6:30pm.
