Stingers Strike Late Again, Hand Isotopes 6-3 Defeat
July 29, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
For the third straight night, the Salt Lake Stingers (61-45) waited until the late innings to steal a win away from the Albuquerque Isotopes (58-49) in a 6-3 decision Friday night at Isotopes Park. The Stingers, who trailed 2-0 after four innings and 2-1 after seven, scored five runs over the last two innings, highlighted by a home run by Luke Allen that that broke a 3-all tie in the ninth to hand the âTopes their third straight defeat.
Salt Lake took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning when it scored a pair of unearned runs as a result of a fielding error by Joe Dillon that preceded RBI singles by Alberto Callaspo, who finished with a game-high four hits, and Curtis Pride, who broke a 2-all tie with a two-out base hit to left field. After Albuquerque tied the game in the home half when Matt Padgett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Callaspo followed Allen's lead-off homer with a two-run single off reliever Jim Crowell (2-4) to lift the Stingers to the victory. Greg Jones (1-1) picked up the win for Salt Lake.
The comeback foiled what was a superb effort by Albuquerque starter Ariel Prieto, who allowed just one run in seven strong innings and left with a 2-1 lead. The veteran right-hander has not suffered a defeat in more than a month when he took the loss at Round Rock on June 26. To make matters worse for the Isotopes, the Express held on to defeat Colorado Springs, 7-6, to pull within three games of first-place.
The Isotopes got on the board in the first inning when Wilson Delgado led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on a base hit by Joe Dillon. Josh Wilson made it 2-0 in the third with his third home run in four games - a solo shot that cleared the fence in left field. Wilson has now driven in at least one run in each of the Isotopes' last five contests and had nine RBIs in the four-game set.
Adam Pavkovich hit his seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning to cut the âTopes' lead in half to set the stage for the Stingers' second come-from-behind win of the series.
The Isotopes will continue their eight-game homestand Saturday night with the first of a four game-set against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Right-handed pitcher Frank Castillo (8-7, 5.12) is scheduled to take the mound for Albuquerque against Sky Sox righty Zach Day (no record). The game will mark the return of the hilarious Myron Noodleman - and this time he's bringing his own bobbleheads to the first 2,500 fans, courtesy of ABC Seamless.
The promotional schedule for the homestand wraps up Sunday when the first 2,500 fans in the park will receive Isotopes hats, courtesy of Jackalope and Comcast as well as a special Albuquerque Journal Autograph Session where fans will be able to get photo cards signed by two members of your Isotopes! Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
