Round Rock Express News Release
(Round Rock, TX) - The Round Rock Express managed to hold on for all they were worth and survived with a 7-6 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the final game of a four game series at The Dell Diamond.
After striking out the first four batters he faced, Express starter Brandon Duckworth gave up a two-out single to CF Ryan Spilborghs, and an RBI double to 3B Jeff Baker to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Express hitters pounded Sox starter Christian Parker for four runs on four hits including an RBI single from RF Todd Self and Barry Wesson's RBI double to take a comfortable 4-1 lead. The Express added another RBI single from Self to make it 5-1 E-Train in the third inning.
But as the Express found out, the game was far from over against the top hitting PCL team Colorado Springs. With two outs in the fourth inning, the Sox began chipping away. For the second time on the night, Spilborghs singled with two outs in the fourth inning, stole second and scored on Baker's second RBI double of the night.
Round Rock got a solo homer from Wesson in the fourth inning to make it 6-2, E-Train.
The Sky Sox refused to concede. They got a triple from SS Omar Quintanilla leading off the fifth inning. He scored on an RBI single from 2B Elvis Pena to make it 6-3. The Express countered with an RBI double from Self, his third RBI on the night that upped it to 7-3.
In the sixth inning, the Sox tightened it to 7-5, and made it 7-6 on Quintanilla's solo homer onto the right field berm.
Then, the Express bullpen went to work. Relievers Scott Strickland, who pitched a shutout eighth inning, and closer Will Cunnane who pitched a perfect ninth to record his second save in as many nights and the Express held on to a 7-6 win and a series split with the Sky Sox.
On Saturday, the Salt Lake Stingers, Triple-A affiliate of the Angels, come to The Dell Diamond in a 7:05 PM start. Right-hander Roberto Giron goes for the E-Train.
