RedHawks shut out again in Tucson
July 29, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The RedHawks brought the league's highest-scoring offense to Tucson, but Sidewinders pitching has shut out Oklahoma in consecutive games after Thursday's 4-0 decision at Tucson Electric Park.
Also whitewashed 1-0 on Wednesday, Oklahoma has gone 21 innings without scoring going back to the sixth inning on Tuesday.
Major league rehabbers Brandon Lyon and Oscar Villarreal pitched the first and second innings and neither allowed a baserunner. Lefty Mark Freed (7-4) followed Villarreal in the third and tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win. Kerry Ligtenberg allowed two hits in the ninth but closed out the shutout, Tucson's fifth of the year and Oklahoma's seventh.
Juan Dominguez (1-1) pitched the first four innings, allowing three runs on five hits, to take the loss.
Tucson out-hit Oklahoma 9-6, taking the lead with nobody out in the first inning. Andy Green led off with a walk and scored on Keoni DeRenne's triple. DeRenne then scored on a ground out. Tucson added a run in the third off Dominguez and another in the seventh against Justin Thompson.
Tucson won its sixth straight in improving to 56-50. Oklahoma, seven games back of Albuquerque and three behind second place Round Rock, fell to 51-55.
The RedHawks had only two runners in scoring position all game. Manny Alexander reached second with no outs in the fifth and Chad Allen reached as far as third with two out in the ninth.
The series concludes Friday at 9 p.m. CDT as righthander R.A. Dickey will be opposed by rehabber Russ Ortiz. Edgar Gonzalez is slated to follow Ortiz, the former OU Sooner currently on Arizona's DL with a stress fracture in the rib cage.
The past two days have been stellar for Arizona pitching, as the Diamondbacks have tossed consecutive shutouts over Milwaukee and Chicago while Tucson has blanked Oklahoma in two straight.
Friday's broadcast can be heard on Super Talk 930 WKY and Sportsjuice.com.
