Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Calvin Pickering was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Omaha Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Beavers before 9,061 at PGE Park Thursday night.
With a single and a double in his first two at-bats, Omaha's Matt Diaz extended his consecutive hit streak to eight at-bats before flying out his third time up Thursday. Diaz was a perfect 6-for-6 on Wednesday night.
Omaha (47-59) got out to a 2-0 lead in the third when Pickering dropped a bloop single into shallow left to score Aaron Guiel and Diaz.
The Beavers got on the board in the bottom of the third. Ben Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and Paul McAnulty's two-out double to right field was enough to get him home.
Paul Phillips reached base on an error by Portland third baseman Sean Burroughs to start the fourth and scored on Chris Truby's single up the middle to put the Royals up 3-1.
Miguel Ojeda blasted a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth for Portland, but Santiago Ramirez got Wilson Valdez to line out sharply to right to wrap up the win.
Reliever Chris George (7-7) did not allow a hit over 3.2 scoreless innings for the win.
Making his second start at Triple-A, Mike Thompson (1-1) suffered his first loss with the Beavers (51-54) after giving up three runs (2 earned) on 11 hits over seven innings.
Despite scoring the Beavers' only run, Johnson was held without a hit to have his 17-game hit streak come to a close for the Beavers.
The Beavers conclude their series with the Royals Friday night before opening a four-game home set against the Iowa Cubs on Saturday.
NOTES: J.J. Furmaniak departed PGE Park early Thursday evening after he was traded to Pittsburgh earlier in the day for catcher David Ross. Furmaniak, a Triple-A All-Star with Portland, will join the Pirates' Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate after playing more games (219) than any other player for the Beavers over the past two seasons.
