Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - A trio of Asheville pitchers, led by starter Ryan Mattheus, put the brakes on Greenville's recent torrid performance at the plate Friday night. The Bombers, who had scored 38 times during a three-game win streak, had their run snapped at Municpal Stadium in a 6-2 defeat.
Mattheus (3-3) broke a three-game personal losing streak, winning for the first time since May 20th. The righthander allowed two runs on just four hits over seven innings while striking out five batters. Relievers Darric Merrell and Scott Beerer finished the job for the Tourists, working a scoreless inning each.
After Asheville tallied a run in the first inning on a Chris Nelson RBI single off Jarrett Gardner (1-4), the game settled into a pitcher's duel. Gardner, who now has lost his last four starts, proceeded to retire 17 of 18 batters from the first through sixth innings. In the meantime the Bombers tied the game in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Claudio Arias, his second in as many nights.
Gardner then ran into trouble in the decisive sixth inning. After retiring the first two batters of the frame, Joe Koshansky singled. Neil Wilson then lifted a home run to left field to up the Tourists lead to 3-1. Gardner then yeilded a single to Justin Nelson, which was followed by a two-run blast to right by Dustin Hahn to make it 5-1.
The Tourists broke a three-game losing streak with the victory.
The clubs meet in game three of the four-game series on Saturday at 7:05pm. Righthanders Beau Vaughan (0-0) for Greenville and Samuel Deduno (5-3) for Asheville will pitch.
