Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters (20-9) won their ninth consecutive series with a 3-1 victory against the Joliet Slammers on Thursday night.
Pitcher Ryan Zamorsky (4-1) threw 7.0 scoreless innings for the Otters, allowing just one run on three hits. Zamorsky also lowered his earned run average to 1.43 in the Evansville victory.
Evansville gave Zamorsky a lead in the very first inning. After he struck out two batters in the top half of the inning, the Otters responded with back to back triples from outfielders John Schultz and C.J. Henry.
Schultz would score on the hit from Henry, and Frank Martinez plated the second run on an RBI groundout.
Holding the 2-0 lead, Zamorsky's pitching and sure-handed defense continued to keep Joliet scoreless.
Evansville recorded an inning-ending double play in the fourth, and an inning-ending diving catch from Henry in the fifth.
The 2-0 advantage would hold until the seventh inning when Slammers shortstop Michael Wing led off with a home run to left field. The home run cut the deficit in half. Outfielder David Christensen then hit a single and stole second base. Christensen tried to tag up on a fly ball to right, but Henry's throw to third beat Christensen for the double play.
Ahead just 2-1, Evansville loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Otters loaded the bases for designated hitter Sam Mahoney who lifted an RBI single to left field. It was Mahoney's first RBI as an Evansville Otter, providing a two-run cushion.
Closer Eric Massingham (eighth save) threw a scoreless ninth inning, retiring the tying run on a fly ball to end the game. Shultz and shortstop Ryan Kresky both finished with two hits in the win.
Friday, June 21 marks a new series as Evansville hosts the Frontier Greys. It is Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Night. The date also marks the Summer Solstice, also known as the longest day of the year.
The Otters and cMoe have teamed up for the Longest Day of Play! Fans can visit cMoe and the Otters game on the same day for just $9! First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm CDT. Evansville will have left- hander Rich Hawkins (1-1, 2.08 ERA) against lefty Matt Costello (0-2, 3.75 ERA).
