Joliet Slammers News Release
Last time out...
Joliet fell in game one of their scheduled double header on Wednesday by a score of 5-0 but bounced back in game two to prevail 6-0. Matt Zielinski tossed a complete game shutout and held the Slammers to four hits in game one. Evansville tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and never look back against Joliet starter Shawn Kale. In the second game of the double headers the Slammers struck first with a run in the second inning on a RBI grounder from Nick Akins. Akins would drive in another run in the seventh with a RBI single but it was a Marquis Riley grand slam in the same inning that sunk the Otters as the Slammers won 6-0 behind the outstanding pitching of Chuck Lofgren. Lofgren went six shutout innings and struck out seven batters while only surrendering two hits. Justin Erasmus finished the game off for Joliet in the 7th as the Slammers snapped their 5-game losing streak.
For Starters...
Corey Kimes is coming off an outing against the Traverse City Beach Bums on June 14 where he went five innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits. He would suffer the loss as Joliet fell 12-2 in the game. Kimes, a former star for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, brings an undefeated record in affiliated ball to Joliet. The Ottawa, IL native went 5-0 in 2012 between the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League and the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. In two seasons of affiliated baseball, Kimes has posted an impressive 3.25 ERA in 22 appearances including six starts. He was an 18th round selection of the Minnesota Twins in the 2011 MLB draft.
