Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Traverse City Beach Bums were able to settle down a wild contest in the middle innings and then add an insurance run late as the Beach Bums won a team record eighth straight game, downing the Washington Wild Things 5-3 on Thursday night.
The Beach Bums had won seven games in a row twice previously, in 2008 and 2012.
The two teams traded early homeruns as in the bottom of the first, Stewart Ijames went deep for the Wild Things. In the top of the second, Sean Gusrang did the same for the Beach Bums, tying the game at 1-1. Traverse City plated two more runs in the top of the second as following the homerun, Jeremy Banks singled, Ryan Still was hit by a pitch and D'Marcus Ingram walked to load the bases. Jose Vargas lined a ball down the leftfield line to score two runs and make it 3-1 TC.
Washington got the runs back in the bottom of the frame as a Scott Kalamar RBI single and a homerun from Gus Benusa tied the game at 3-3.
Traverse City came back in the top of the third as Carlo Testa singled with one out. On a 1-1 pitch to Zach Kometani, Testa tried to steal second. Kometani grounded a ball up the middle that went through the legs of C. J. Beatty who was covering on the steal attempt. Testa raced around the bases to score and make it 4-3 Beach Bums. An insurance run was added in the ninth on D'Marcus Ingram's first homerun in a Traverse City uniform to make it 5-3.
The win went to Mike Devine (1-1) who settled in after a rough couple innings to start to toss five frames allowing three runs. Nick Capito struck out four batters during the final two innings to earn the save. In the middle, Burny Mitchem pitched two perfect innings to keep the Wild Things at bay.
Traverse City now heads to Normal for a three game series starting on Friday night. Jake Sabol (5-1, 1.45) starts for the Beach Bums against Tyler Lavigne (1-2, 2.62) for the CornBelters. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 pm with the Budweiser Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM beginning at 7:40 pm.
