Miners Record Eight Hits in Loss

Marion, IL - The Miners (16-14) recorded eight hits and Preston Vancil was solid through five innings but it wasn't enough as the Gateway Grizzlies (19-10) won 2-0 to avoid being swept. Vancil earned his first loss of the season.

Gateway scored a run off Vancil in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI groundout by short stop Max Ayarza and added another run (unearned) in the top of the sixth inning off Michael Carden. Leftfielder Jon Myers hit a sacrifice fly to score third baseman Chris McClendon.

Matt Sergey pitched two innings in relief and struck out one batter. Jon Mark Abbey recorded his first professional strikeout as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Carlos Colmenares and Phil Butler each had two hits for the Miners.

The Miners welcome in the Florence Freedom this weeked for a three game series. First pitch gets underway on Friday at 7:05 pm. Mike Ventola will have the call on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
