Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds completed yet another four-game sweep, this time over the Lakewood BlueClaws. Delmarva (34-22) rode an amazing performance from Mike Yastrzemski who drilled two three-run triples in the victory on Sunday afternoon.
The game started quietly with the BlueClaws inching out to small leads. Lakewood used smallball to manufacture the first run in the third inning. After a leadoff walk and single, Carlos Tocci dropped a sacrifice bunt to move up the runners. Jose Mayorga scored on an RBI grounder by J.P. Crawford.
After squandering early opportunities, Delmarva finally got on the board in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Federico Castagnini beat out a grounder to short for an RBI fielder's choice.
Lakewood reestablished their lead with a single tally in the fifth. A simple flyball, which should have been the final out, dropped between Conor Bierfeldt and Gregory Lorenzo in left-center. Willians Astudillo capitalized with a line drive single, giving the BlueClaws a 2-1 lead.
Once again, Delmarva hurried back, this time for good. With two outs and two runners on, Lakewood went to the bullpen with Delvi Francisco. Justin Viele drew a walk to load the bases. Yastrzemski hooked a line drive to the right field corner for a three-run triple.
Now leading 4-2, the Shorebirds broke open the contest with seven runs in the seventh. Conor Bierfeldt smashed a two-run double off the left field wall. Later, Yastrzemski roped another bases-clearing triple, as Delmarva pushed their lead to 11-2.
Steven Brault earned the win for Delmarva with six innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits. Dennis Torres pitched the final three innings for a nine-out save, his third of the year. Mark Leiter, Jr. fell to 4-5 with the defeat.
Mike Yastrzemski finished 3-for-6 with a double and two triples. The six RBIs for Yastrzemski are the most by a Shorebird in a single game this season. The outfielder now leads the team with 34 RBIs on the year.
After the sweep of Lakewood, Delmarva travels to face the first-place Hagerstown Suns. Right-hander Sebastian Vader (7-1, 3.09) will start the opener against left-hander Hector Silvestre (1-3, 3.63). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Municipal Stadium.
