Augusta Edges Legends 6-5

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Rafael Rodriguez drove in three runs with a homer and a single, and the Augusta GreenJackets held on for a 6-5 win over the Lexington Legends in front of 5,311 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Sunday night.

Augusta scored a run in the top of the first inning. Chris Lofton walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch by Legends starter Pedro Fernandez.

The Legends claimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs and the bases empty, Frank Schwindel hit his sixth home run in his last six games to tie the score. Mauricio Ramos followed with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Dominique Taylor.

The GreenJackets pulled even with a run in the second. Cristian Paulino singled with two outs, stole second and came on a single by Rando Moreno.

Ramos' RBI double in the third gave the Legends a 3-2 lead, but Rafael Rodriguez' two-run homer in the fourth put Augusta back on top 4-3.

The GreenJackets added two more in the fifth. Tripp Davis relieved Fernandez at the start of the inning. He struck out Lofton, but Ryder Jones singled. He was forced out at second on a grounder by Jeremy Sy. Brandon Bednar's single more Sy to second. Eric Sim hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded behind second by Ramon Torres, and Sy scored from second base as Bednar took second. Rodriguez single scored Bednar, giving the GreenJackets a 6-3 margin.

The Legends cut the lead to one in the sixth. Taylor led off with a single, and with one out took second when Moreno, the shortstop, bobbled a grounder hit by Humberto Arteaga.

After Samir Duenez walked, Dex Kjerstad grounded a single into left field, scoring Taylor. Arteaga came home on a ground out by Alfredo Escalera, leaving Augusta on top 6-5.
