Hagerstown Suns News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns (37-19) avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Kannapolis Intimidators (25-30) by splitting a double-header on Sunday. The Intimidators won game one of the double-header Sunday 5-1, while the Suns took game two 11-5. Hagerstown ended its eight-game road trip with a 2-6 record.

In game one of the double-header on Sunday the Intimidators put up three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Third baseman Trey Michalczewski delivered a two-out two-run double in the inning, and he scored on a single to short by catcher Jeremy Dowdy. That's all the run support starting RHP Jake Sanchez (5-3) would need, as he tossed a complete game of seven innings, surrendering one earned run on five hits while striking out six. Starting RHP Reynaldo Lopez (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He threw three innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two.

In the second game of the double-header on Sunday the Suns collected 11 runs on 12 hits. Eight of those 11 runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning, when Hagerstown sent 12 hitters to the plate and turned a 4-3 deficit into an 11-4 rout. LHP Joseph Webb (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Starting RHP Tyler Barnette (2-4) took the loss for Kannapolis. He allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings.

The series began with two one-run losses for the Suns during a double-header on Saturday. In game one of the double-header Kannapolis was held to just three hits, but two of those hits left the yard, including a two-run homerun by CF Hunter Jones in the bottom of the fifth. The Jones homerun turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead for the Intimidators, and that wound up being the final score. Starting RHP Robinson Leyer (3-3) notched the win for Kannapolis, going six innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting RHP Jake Johansen (4-2) took the loss for Hagerstown. He threw five innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six.

In the second game of the double-header on Saturday the Intimidators plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish, as neither team scored in the final four innings. Right fielder Jacob Morris drove in the winning run for Kannapolis with a single to left-center field. LHP Jordan Guerrero (3-0) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Intimidators to pick up the win. Starting RHP Jefry Rodriguez (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He went three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. RHP David Putman recorded his third save of the year by tossing a scoreless seventh.

In total Kannapolis and Hagerstown both scored 17 runs over the course of the series, but the Suns out-hit the Intimidators 33-26. The Suns next head home to Municipal Stadium to begin a three-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds (34-22) that starts on Monday, June 2. LHP Hector Silvestre (1-2) will make his ninth start of the season for Hagerstown. He will match up against RHP Sebastian Vader (7-1) for Delmarva. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 6:35pm.
