Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 1, 2014) - The Hagerstown Suns used an 8-run fourth inning to propel themselves to an 11-5 win (F/7) over Kannapolis in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at CMC-NorthEast Stadium, preventing a series sweep by the Intimidators. Kannapolis (25-30) did take three of four games against the first-place Suns on the home stand, including the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Kannapolis used a 3-run second inning to build a 3-2 lead, highlighted by RBI-singles from Carlos Thomore and Hunter Jones. After Hagerstown tied the game, 3-3, in the third, Omar Narvaez put the Intimidators back in front 4-3 with a sac-fly in the bottom of the third before the Suns got hot.
Tyler Barnette retired the first two batters of the fourth inning before giving up a walk and two hits to load the bases. Isaac Ballou followed with a 2-run double to give Hagerstown a 5-4 lead. After Wilmer Difo added a run-scoring single, John Wooten followed with a 2-run triple to make it 8-4. Craig Manuel chased Barnette from the game with his own RBI-single, and Drew Ward hit a 2-run home run (4) off reliever Jose Brito to give the Suns an 11-4 advantage.
T.J. Williams, who reached on an infield single in his first at-bat to snap an 0-for-22 streak at the plate, led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run (3), but Kannapolis would not score again. Williams finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Trey Michalczewski went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hunter Jones finished 1-for-4 with an RBI-single, extending his hitting-streak to seven games.
Barnette (2-4) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits over 3 and 2/3 innings. Joseph Webb spun 3.0 scoreless relief innings to pick up the win for Hagerstown after Suns starter Andrew Cooper surrendered five runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.
The Intimidators hit the road for seven games with a 3-game series at West Virginia followed by four in Asheville before returning to Kannapolis on Monday, June 9, to open a 7-game home stand.
