THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 5-3 to Greensboro at NewBridge Bank Park on Saturday night. The Grasshoppers scored once in the third off Power starter Buddy Borden and added a two-run home run the fourth by Kentrell Dewitt. After Henry Hirsch allowed runs in the sixth and seventh, West Virginia cut the deficit to two in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Edwin Espinal singled in two and another scored on a fielding error to put the Power down 5-3. After Erich Weiss was hit by a pitch, the Hoppers bullpen settled in, retiring the final five batters in a row to halt the comeback. Domingo German earned his fifth win while Borden was saddled with his third loss.
ON THE HOP: West Virginia concludes its second of three series this season at Greensboro. The Power and Grasshoppers have played 128 times since 2005 when both clubs were re-branded and moved to new ballparks. West Virginia holds a 69-59 lead in the all-time set. The Power and Grasshoppers have split 66 games at NewBridge Bank Park, winning 33 times apiece, including five wins in seven game this year by Greensboro.
HERE THEN HOME: West Virginia concludes its seven game road trip today. The Power are 3-3 on this swing and are looking to complete their first winning road trip of the season, save the one game stop in Kannapolis on April 17. The Power return home for three against the Intimidators before the final road trip of the first half; a four game stint in Hickory next weekend. West Virginia concludes the first half at home against Greensboro and Delmarva.
ONE STEP AWAY: Former Power outfielder Mel Rojas, Jr. made his Triple-A debut on Saturday, serving as the designated hitter for the Indianapolis Indians. Pittsburgh selected Rojas, Jr., in the third round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Wabash Valley College in Indiana and he appeared in 131 games for West Virginia during his first full season (2011). The 24-year-old went 1-3 with a walk in his Indianapolis Indians debut while batting seventh.
IRON MEN: Jacoby Jones and Delmarva's Trey Mancini have played 54 games this season, more than anyone else in the league. Erich Weiss is in a group of three who have played 53 games, while Wyatt Mathisen is in a group of seven who have played in 52 games this season.
NINETEEN STRAIGHT: Reese McGuire's hitting streak reached 19 games with an eighth inning double on Friday. The 19-year-old's streak is the longest active run in the South Atlantic League and trailed only Asheville's Pat Valaika and his 22-game streak in April to early May as the longest by any player in the league this season. McGuire's streak is also the longest by a Power player since Starling Marte hit safely in 22 straight during the 2009 season.
EXTRA FUN: The Power are now 2-0 in extra innings this season after Friday night's win over the Grasshoppers. After having not played an extra inning game over the first 38 games of the year, the club has played bonus baseball twice in the last 16 games. Lakewood is the only team in the league who have gone to extra innings less (one time).
AIN'T IT GRAND: JaCoby Jones grand slam on Friday was the third by a Power player this season and second this week. The shortstop has now hit a team-best seven home runs this season and leads West Virginia with 27 runs batted in.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 3: West Virginia hosts Kannapolis at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, June 3. It is the first of two "Bark in the Park" games at Appalachian Power Park this season. Dogs are admitted free without a ticket.
POWER POINTS: Austin Meadows was promoted to the West Virginia roster from Jamestown on Saturday and placed on the Power Disabled List. The outfielder has not played this season due to a left hamstring injury...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 12-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. LA knocked Brandon Cumpton around for 11 runs on ten hits... Indianapolis lost to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre 7-3. The RailRiders held a 2-0 lead in the second and never trailed... Altoona was shutout by New Hampshire for the second straight day, losing 4-0... Bradenton was tripped 1-0 at Clearwater. Orlando Castro allowed the run in the first and took the loss as the Marauders fell a game under .500 at 27-28.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games and will be joined by Jake Corrigan when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
