Yard Goats Shutout 4-0 in Richmond

Richmond, VA - Flying Squirrels starter Garrett Williams fired seven scoreless innings, and combined with reliever Chase Johnson on a one-hit shutout victory, as Richmond beat Hartford 4-0 on Saturday evening at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. First baseman Tyler Nevin extended his hitting streak to 9 consecutive games with a single in the first inning, which turned out be the only hit of the game for the Yard Goats. Jalen Miller delivered a two RBI triple in the first inning to give Richmond the early lead off Brandon Gold who pitched well in the defeat. The Flying Squirrels pitching staff only allowed four baserunners in the game. The Yard Goats wrap up the seven game road trip tomorrow afternoon.
Richmond scored a pair of runs in the first inning off Brandon Gold. Bryce Johnson reached on an infield single and then Peter Maris walked putting runners at first and second base for Jalen Miller. The infielder ripped a triple down into the right field corner scoring Johnson and Maris to give the Flying Squirrels a 2-0 lead. Gold settled down after that and struck out the next three batters and allowed just two hits over the next five innings while registering a season-high 8 strikeouts.
Flying Squirrels starter Garrett Williams allowed a two-out walk to Colton Welker in the first inning and then a single to Tyler Nevin. He then retired the next ten Yard Goats batters before Scott Burcham reached on an error in the fifth inning. The righty worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth and retired the side in order four times. He departed the game after seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
Richmond added two runs in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Johnson and RBI double by Peter Maris off reliever Alexander Guillen to make it a 4-0 game.
The Yard Goats wrap up the two-city seven-game road trip on Sunday afternoon (1:05 PM) against the Richmond Flying Squirrels at The Diamond in Virginia. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and 100.9 FM and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
