Bowie Completes 7-Run Comeback in 8-7 Stunner

BOWIE, Md. - Down 7-0, the Bowie Baysox completed the largest comeback of the season to defeat the Akron RubberDucks, 8-7, in front of 4,629 at Prince George's Stadium Saturday night.

Akron (4-8) took the opening lead for the third time in three games this series with a six-run second inning. Trenton Brooks and Li-Jen Chu hit back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches from RHP Marcos Molina to put the Ducks ahead 2-0.

The visitors loaded the bases with one out for Alex Call, who launched a grand slam to left field to increase the lead to 6-0. Nellie Rodriguez lined a two-out solo home run to left field in the third inning to tack on the extra point and give Akron a 7-0 lead.

Bowie (9-2) waited until the third inning to enter the home run derby, and they sent 10 men to the dish during a six-run frame to cut the deficit to 7-6. A walk, a single and a walk loaded the bases three batters into the inning for Ryan McKenna, who crushed a grand slam to left field to take the team lead in RBI (32) and tie Yusniel Diaz for the team lead in home runs (6).

That share of the top spot lasted five pitches, as Diaz gave the hosts back-to-back home runs with a solo shot down the line in left field. Four batters later, T.J. Nichting sent a rocket groundball under the dive of Rodriguez at first base to plate Rylan Bannon for the outfielder's 22nd RBI of the 2019 season.

The Baysox started their fifth inning in identical fashion to the third inning, loading the bases with a walk, a single and a second walk off LHP Anthony Gose. Facing new pitcher Ben Krauth, Jesse Valentin tied the game by drawing a four-pitch walk to score Diaz.

One batter later, a 6-4-3 double play allowed Carlos Perez to cross home with the go-ahead run. The Baysox stormed all the way to take an 8-7 lead after five innings after trailing 7-0, marking the largest comeback victory of the season.

The bullpen stepped up once again for Bowie, with RHP Francisco Jimenez allowing one run in four innings to earn his third win of the season. RHP Dillon Tate struck out five batters and stranded three runners on base during his three innings to earn his second save of the week.

Bowie aims for a four-game sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. LHP Zac Lowther (8-4, 2.03) takes the mound for Los Cangrejos Fantasmas de Chesapeake against Akron LHP Adam Scott (1-0, 4.26). Sunday is Latin Baseball Day at the ballpark, as well as the 1st Meet the Team Day before the game.

The Chrome Run Car Show and the Maryland Food Truck Festival take place in the parking lot, although you need a ticket to the game to access the Food trucks. After the game, 10,000 pieces of candy will fall from the sky during the annual Helicopter Candy Drop for kids ages 12 & under.
