Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Altoona, PA - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (40-37, 5-8) split a doubleheader with the Altoona Curve (41-37, 6-5) on Saturday at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Rumble Ponies won Game One 2-1 and dropped Game Two 4-3 in nine innings.
Game One - Rumble Ponies 2, Curve 1 (7)
Mickey Jannis (4-1) allowed just three hits and one run over six innings to earn his 25th career win with Binghamton, tying him with Tyler Pill for the most in franchise history. In the seventh, Jannis allowed the first two hitters to get on before the tarp came on the field in what would be a 45-minute rain delay. When play resumed, Stephen Villines came in and earned his fifth save of the year.
Barrett Barnes had an RBI double in the first and Gavin Cecchini added an RBI single in the fifth proving to be just enough for the Ponies to hold on. It was Barnes third straight game with an RBI. It is Jannis second straight win allowing only one run in both of those outings.
Game Two - Curve 4, Rumble Ponies 3 (9)
Chris Sharpe had the walk-off RBI single in the ninth giving the Curve the extra-innings victory. For a fourth straight game, the Ponies got on the board first as Barrett Barnes again had an RBI double in the first. He has driven in at least one run in all four games of the series.
Joe Zanghi made his second straight start out of the bullpen and allowed two runs over three and two thirds innings pitched. Andres Gimenez RBI single in the fifth tied the game at two and Quinn Brodey's RBI single in the eighth put the Ponies up 3-2. Altoona tied it in the bottom of the eighth on a sac bunt by Arden Pabst in which pitcher Joseph Shaw (0-3) committed a throwing error.
POSTGAME NOTES: The Ponies fall to 6-2 in extra-inning games...This is the second doubleheader the two clubs have played against each other, as Binghamton swept the first one at NYSEG Stadium on May 14...Ali Sanchez only played in Game 2 and finished 0-4 as his 18-game hitting streak came to a close. It was the longest hitting streak this season in the Eastern League.
The rubber game of the five-game series concludes Sunday night from Altoona with first pitch at 6:00PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show begins at 5:45.
