(READING, PA) - Alec Bohm continues to impress, homering and knocking in three runs to back another solid outing from Damon Jones, as the Fightins took the series from Portland with a 4-1 win on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Jones (1-0) managed to keep the Sea Dogs off the board in the first, working around an infield hit, hit batter, and a two-out walk.
Bohm opened the scoring in the bottom half. After Josh Stephen drew a leadoff walk, Bohm jumped on the first pitch from Kutter Crawford (0-1) and lined a two-run home run over the wall in left to put Reading up 2-0. The home run for Bohm was his third at the Double-A level and 10th total this season.
Reading (7-5) (46-33) doubled its advantage in the fourth. Raul Rivas worked a seven-pitch at-bat and pulled a triple to right to lead off the frame. With one out, Bohm came through with a single through the left side for his third RBI of the night. Mickey Moniak drew a walk, and Darick Hall scorched a single over second to load the bases.
Grenny Cumana followed with a fielder's choice grounder that resulted in an out at third, but allowed Bohm to cross the plate to make it 4-0 Reading.
Portland (3-7) (30-47) cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, after Tate Matheny doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch.
Jones tossed six innings in his home debut, limiting Portland to just a run on four hits and three walks while striking out six.
Garrett Cleavinger and Jakob Hernandez combined for two scoreless innings in relief, and Addison Russ struck out the side in the ninth to lock down his 11th save.
The finale of the four-game series is set for Sunday at 5:15 p.m. with Bailey Falter on the mound against Matthew Kent. The game will be broadcast on 610 ESPN and the Fightins radio network beginning at 4:45 p.m.
