Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Akron RubberDucks hit four home runs to build a 7-0, third-inning lead, but the Bowie Baysox rallied with six runs in the third and two in the fifth inning for an 8-7 victory and third straight win at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday night.
Turning Point
With a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, Akron right-hander Eli Morgan walked Bowie first baseman Preston Palmeiro, designated hitter Chris Clare singled, and shortstop Mason McCoy walked, before center fielder Ryan McKenna hit a grand slam to left field. The next batter, right fielder Yusniel Diaz hit a solo home run to left field, cutting the Akron lead to 7-5 and ending Morgan's start after two innings and five batters. Right-hander Jordan Stephens entered and allowed another run on two hits. The 7-6 lead stood until the fifth inning, when left-hander Anthony Gose (0-2) allowed two walks and a single to load the bases, and left-hander Ben Krauth walked catcher Carlos Perez to tie the game, and third baseman Rylan Bannon grounded into a double play that scored the go-ahead run.
Mound Presence
Morgan shut out Bowie for the first two innings but did not retire a batter in the third, making it the shortest outing for a RubberDucks starter this season. Stephens allowed a run in two innings. Krauth pitched three scoreless innings, although two inherited runners scored against him. Left-hander David Speer pitched a perfect eighth inning. For Bowie, right-hander Marcos Molina yielded six runs in two innings - his shortest start of the season - before right-hander Francisco Jimenez (3-0) went four innings, allowing one run. With scoreless relief, right-hander Dillon Tate got a three-inning save.
Duck Tales
RubberDucks designated hitter Trenton Brooks led off the second inning with a home run off the right-field foul pole (his first in Double-A), and catcher Li-Jen Chu hit the next pitch for a home run to right field (his fourth of the season and third against Bowie). Akron loaded the bases, before center fielder Alex Call hit Akron's first grand slam of the season to left field for a 6-0 lead. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the third inning for a 7-0 Akron lead.
