Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today the 2023-24 Division nominees for the Bil Hunter Memorial Trophy awarded annually to the WHL Defenceman of the Year. Carter Yakemchuk has been nominated for the award, being named the WHL Central Division Defenceman of the Year.
Yakemchuk had a record-breaking year, making history with the most goals recorded by a Hitmen defenceman in a single season, beating the previous record of 24 set by Jake Bean 2015-16 season. The 18 year-old finished the season second in team scoring with a career high 71 points (30g, 41a) and lead all WHL defencemen with 30 goals.
Ranked sixth amongst North American Skaters in the NHL Central Scouting's Midterm rankings, Yakemchuk also earned an invitation to the 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Moncton, N.B. back in January. Most recently he was named to the WHL Central division First All-Star Team. Over the course of 189 games with the Hitmen, Yakemchuk has registered 131 points (53g, 78a).
All individual WHL Division Award winners will be eligible for the 2024 WHL Awards. The Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy winner will be revealed on Tuesday, May 7.
