Swift Current, Sask. - The Western Hockey League (WHL) announced today that Broncos forward Conor Geekie has been named the Central Division's Player of the Year and is a nominee for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL's Player of the Year.
Geekie (Strathclair, Man.), joined the Broncos after a trade with the Wenatchee Wild on January 4 and made an immediate impact on the team. Overall, this season, the Arizona Coyotes first-round pick scored 43 goals and added 56 assists for 99 points in 55 games. That was the most points and goals by a player in the Central Division. Geekie's 1.80 points-per-game was also fourth in the entire WHL this season. Geekie finished 10th in the WHL in goals, 11th in points, and 19th in assists.
After Geekie's debut, the Broncos earned a 20-7-2-0 record, en-route to a Central Division title. Geekie also ended the regular season on a 17-game point streak that included 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points.
During the Broncos first-round sweep of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Geekie scored in all four games, including the overtime winner in game four on Wednesday night. He also added two assists to total six points in the first round.
Geekie, now a nominee for the WHL's Player of the Year and the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy will look to become the first Bronco since Adam Lowry in 2012/2013 to win the award, and the fifth player all-time. The other winners include Joe Sakic (1987/1988 & Eastern Conference Player of the Year in 1986/1987), Jason Krywulak (1992/1993), and Sergei Varlamov (1997/1998).
The most prestigious individual award of the Western Hockey League has been named the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy in memory of the four members of the Swift Current Broncos who died in a tragic accident on December 30, 1986.
