Jan Špunar Named U.S. Division Goaltender of the Year
April 4, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to recognize Jan Špunar, who has been named the U.S. Division Goaltender of the Year. Špunar is also one of four finalists nominated for the Del Wilson Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the WHL Goaltender of the Year.
Špunar, 19, was recently named to the U.S. Division First All-Star Team following a career year in the Rose City. Finishing the regular season with a 25-6-2-1 record and two shutouts, Špunar became just the 13th all-time Winterhawks goaltender to win 25 games in a single season. He accomplished that despite missing 27 games from November 2023 to February 2024 with a lower-body injury.
The Olomouc, Czechia native led the Western Conference with a .913 save percentage and 2.12 goals-against average in the regular season. Špunar opened the 2023-24 campaign by allowing just nine goals in his first eight starts and was named the WHL Goaltender of the Month in September and October.
NHL Central Scouting ranked the 6-foot-3, 199-pound backstop 21st among North American goaltenders eligible for the 2024 NHL Draft this summer. Špunar previously attended NHL training camp last fall with the Montreal Canadiens as a non-roster invitee.
In the 2024 postseason, Špunar has backstopped the Winterhawks to a series sweep over the Victoria Royals and has advanced to the Western Conference semifinals for the second time in his WHL tenure.
