THE LEAD OFF: The Power were shutout by the Lexington Legends on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park 4-0. Lexington got on the board in the fifth after Luis Heredia had held the Legends hitless through the first four frames. After a leadoff single, Dex Kjerstad tripled home the first run of the game. In the sixth, Lexington pulled away with four runs behind a Kjerstand three-RBI double. West Virginia mustered just four hits and only had one runner in scoring position the entire evening. Luis Heredia was charged with the loss despite allowing just one earned run while Matt Tenuta earned the win and Pedro Fernandez notched the save.
HERE IT GOES AGAIN: The Power have played Lexington more than any other opponent during their nine previous seasons. The cross-division rivals are only two-and-a-half hours apart along I-64 and have played 184 times since the start of the 2005 season. West Virginia leads the all-time series 93-91 with a 3-7 mark against Lexington in 2014. The Legends hold the upper hand in Charleston, having a 49-38 mark.
FINAL STRETCH: The Power have 29 games remaining in the 2014 season. 17 of the 29 games will match West Virginia with either Lexington or Asheville. The Power have 9 games left with the Legends, including tonight's affair. Meanwhile, West Virginia will see Asheville eight more times before the season concludes. 10 of the 17 will have the Power on the road.
GOOD AND BAD NEWS: Before Friday's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates placed Jeff Roy on the Power Disabled List after a knee injury sustained on July 29 in Rome. The outfielder was hitting .216 with a home run and 10 RBIs in his time with West Virginia. Meanwhile, the Pirates activated infielder Chris Diaz from the Disabled List. Diaz was placed on the Disabled List on 7/21 and was hitting .216 with 18 runs batted in.
LATE BLOOMERS: The West Virginia Power won 20 games in the first half of the 2014 season. With 30 games remaining in the second half, the Power are one win away from tying that mark. West Virginia won their 20th game of the first half on May 30 with a 6-2 victory at Greensboro.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: With a win over the Rome Braves on Tuesday night, the West Virginia Power captured their seventh series win of the 2014 season. It was the first series win in the month of July for the Power and the first since a series victory over Delmarva. West Virginia took the series 3-1 back on June 26 in Salisbury.
BULLPEN BURNT: In 39 second half games, West Virginia's starting pitchers have a 10-11 record and a 3.51 earned run average over 202.2 innings pitched. The Power bullpen is 9-11, but has a 5.00 ERA over 169 innings. During the first half of the season, the bullpen's earned run average was a half a run lower than the starters (4.20 compared to 4.73).
DESIGNATED TO HIT: At the mid-point of the 2014 season, West Virginia's designated hitters had a collective .189 average over 68 games (43 hits over 227 at bats). Over 41 games since break, Power designated hitters are batting a collective .333 (48 hits over 144 at bats).
POWER PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 23: The Power battle the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday, August 23 at Appalachian Power Park on for Back to School Night. Backpacks will be given away to the first 1,000 fans 12 and under.
POWER POINTS: Prior to Sunday's game, the Pirates activated infielder Wyatt Mathisen off the Power Disabled List. Pittsburgh transferred infielder Francisco Aponte back to the Jamestown Jammers roster to clear a roster spot...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied back to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4. The Pirates scored three runs in the eighth to tie the game and five in the ninth to win it... Indianapolis fell to Buffalo 4-2... Altoona toppled Richmond 7-3. Willy Garcia went 3-4 with a pair of doubles, a home run and three runs batted in... Bradenton edged Brevard County 3-2.Tyler Glasnow earned his eighth win with six scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts ... Jamestown fell to Hudson Valley 2-1. Jerry Mulderig was charged with the loss.
