THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Lakewood 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. The BlueClaws held a 1-0 after the first batter of the game when Jiandido Tromp hit a solo home run off Shane Carle. The Power evened the score in the fourth on a run-scoring fielder's choice. In the eighth, West Virginia plated six runs off the Lakewood bullpen. Erich Weiss was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the eventual winning run. Chris Diaz walked with the bases full to added the third run of the game. With two down, Elvis Escobar's grand slam off Tyler Buckley sealed the victory. Isaac Sanchez earned the win while Delvi Francisco took the loss. Harold Ramirez and Weiss had the only multi-hit games to pace the Power and Diaz added two runs batted in.
SPLIT DECISION: West Virginia split both four game series with Delmarva and Lakewood over the eight game, nine day homestand. The Power had gone 3-14 at Appalachian Power Park this season prior to the homestand and won more games over the last nine days at home than they had over the first month and a half of the season.
WHEN IN ROME: West Virginia and Rome will meet tonight for the first time since July 13, 2012. The Power and Braves have only played each other 28 times since 2005 with each team winning 14 games in the all-time series. West Virginia took three out of four in 2012 to even that record. The clubs will play a total of 11 games against each other this season, including two four games series during July. The Power have a 6-10 record all-time at State Mutual Stadium.
SLAMMED: Elvis Escobar's grand slam on Sunday was the second by a Power player this season and the first to leave the stadium. Erich Wiess hit an inside-the-park grand slam on April 13. Escobar went 5-16 in the four-game set with Lakewood, playing all four days, and drove in nine runs to bring his season total to 14.
STILL GOING: Reese McGuire's hitting streak has reached 15 games and is the longest active streak in the South Atlantic League. The catcher has reached safely in every game since returning from the Disabled List on May 3 (18 straight dating back to April 25 prior to his DL stint) and is hitting .379 during his hitting streak. McGuire's streak is the longest by a West Virginia player since Alen Hanson's 16-game streak in April of 2012.
SO GOOD TO SEE YOU: Shane Carle worked seven innings on Sunday; the longest outing of the season by any Power pitcher. His previous best was also the team's best outing when the right-hander worked six and two third against Greensboro on May 3.
SNAPPED AT SEVENS: JaCoby Jones and Justin Maffei had their hitting streaks stopped at seven games on Sunday. Jones hit .333 (9-27) from May 17-24 while Maffei had a .500 average (11-22) from May 16-24.
OWENS GETS THE CALL: 2009 Power All-Star Rudy Owens made his Major League debut Friday night for the Houston Astros against the Seattle Mariners. Owens, traded by Pittsburgh with Robbie Grossman for Wandy Rodriguez in 2012, is the 39th former Power player to reach the Majors and the second this year (Casey Sadler).
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 3: West Virginia hosts Kannapolis at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, June 3. It is the first of two "Bark in the Park" games at Appalachian Power Park this season. Dogs are admitted free without a ticket.
POWER POINTS: Sunday's win marked the third victory by West Virginia this season when allowing the first run... Edwin Espinal was activated from West Virginia's Disabled List on Thursday and was in the starting lineup for the series opener against Lakewood. Pittsburgh also placed outfielder Candon Myles on the Power Disabled List retroactive to May 20.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh dropped a 5-2 final against Washington on Sunday and saw their four-game winning streak snapped... Indianapolis knocked off Charlotte 10-6. Gregory Polanco went 1-5 and has a IL-best .356 average... Stetson Allie homered twice as the Curve bested Erie on the road by a 10-6 final... Bradenton won a 6-5 walk-off over Port Charlotte. Jeff Roy singled in the game winner during a three-run ninth.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games and will be joined by Jake Corrigan when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
