Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds extended their winning streak to six games with a pair of comeback victories over the Hagerstown Suns. Delmarva (29-21) won both games of a doubleheader with the first-place Suns to pull within six games of the division lead.

In the opener, the Shorebirds fell behind 6-0 when Hagerstown exploded in the second inning. All six runs for the Suns came with two outs against Delmarva starter Steven Brault. Rafael Bautista ripped a two-run double, and Wilmer Difo blasted a three-run home run to highlight the inning.

Brault battled back and gave Delmarva a chance for a comeback. The left-hander did not allow another run as he pitched seven innings in a complete game victory. Delmarva scored one run in the second, and two more in the third to halve the Suns' lead.

Trailing 6-3, the Shorebirds loaded the bases in the sixth. Justin Viele brought home a run on a fielder's choice to make it 6-4. This put the Shorebirds in striking distance for the seventh inning.

Jeff Kemp and Drew Dosch each singled to spark a rally in the final frame. Trey Mancini delivered a third consecutive singles, plating a run to make it 6-5. Austin Wynns drew a walk to load the bases for Josh Hart. The Shorebirds centerfielder lifted a sacrifice fly to score Dosch to tie the game. After a walk to Gregory Lorenzo, Justin Viele bounced a grounder to third base. Drew Ward threw wide of the bag, and Justin Viele slid headfirst to avoid the tag from Jimmy Yezzo. The throwing error gave Delmarva the 7-6 walkoff win with three runs in the seventh.

Delmarva fell behind early in game two, though the deficit was not quite as large. Isaac Ballou hammered the first pitch to deep right-center. Yastrzemski bobbled the rebound off the wall, allowing Ballou to scamper home on a triple and error.

The Shorebirds knotted the game at one run apiece with a RBI double by Conor Bierfeldt in the fourth inning. Drew Dosch gave the Shorebirds a 2-1 advantage with a solo home run in the sixth. Jimmy Yacabonis locked down the save with a perfect seventh inning.

Both starters, Steven Brault and Mitch Horacek, took home wins for Delmarva. Jimmy Yacabonis added to his league-best save count, now at 12 saves on the year. The Shorebirds have now won six in a row, and 12 of their last 13 at Perdue Stadium.

Delmarva will go for a series win over Hagerstown on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Sebastian Vader (6-1, 3.16) will be searching for his sixth straight victory, while lefty Hector Silvestre (1-1, 2.83) starts for the Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
