THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Asheville 12-7 on Sunday. The Power held a 1-0 lead after on inning and Joely Rodriguez held of the Tourists' bats over the first four innings. In the fifth, West Virginia manufactured three runs to extend the lead, but Asheville scored five times in the home half of the inning to move ahead 5-4. A solo home run in the seventh put the Tourists in front by two. In the eighth, the Power sent nine batters to the plate to recapture the lead. Raul Fortunato's three-run home run gave West Virginia a 7-6 and the rest of the offense tacked on five more. Jason Creasy earned the win as the Power finished a series victory by taking three out of for at McCormick Field.
RISING TO THE TOP: The Power lead the league in batting average. West Virginia entered this series Thursday night batting .246 (9th best) and are now hitting .292 after 57 hits over 155 at bats in the four game series at Asheville. Entering play today, the next closest batting average belongs to Delmarva at .274. The Power also lead the league in hits, runs, doubles, and are tied for the lead in home runs.
ALLIE HONORED BY SAL: Earlier today, the South Atlantic League announced its' first Player-of-the-Week award from April 4-14 and Stetson Allie was honored for his work during that time span. Allie is batting .396 with a league-best five home runs and 16 runs batted in this season, having played in every game so far. During the recent series at Asheville, the first baseman batted .500 with nine hits over 18 at bats, knocking three home runs and driving in eight.
MR. IRWIN GOES TO PITTSBURGH: Phil Irwin made his Major League debut Sunday for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-hander was selected in the 21st round of the 2009 draft by Pittsburgh and pitched for the Power in 2010. Irwin was the 29th player to have played for the Power and gone on to play in the Majors. He is the fourth to have played for West Virginia while a Pirates affiliate, joining Chase d'Arnaud, Starling Marte, and Kyle McPherson.
STILL STREAKING: Stetson Allie and Raul Fortunato each have nine game hitting streaks intact entering play today. Allie is batting .475 over his steak, playing every day, with five home runs and 15 runs batted in. Fortunato's streak began on April 5 and the Power outfielder is hitting .375 with two home runs and seven batted in during his run.
NO WINNING DECISIONS: West Virginia's starting pitchers are 0-3 over the first 11 games this season. All four wins and the remaining losses have fallen to the bullpen. Power starters have an ERA of 5.14 over 49 innings pitched, averaging just under five innings per start. The bullpen has combined for 51 innings of work and has an earned run average of 7.59. The staff ERA is 6.30, the highest in the league by over a run. Hickory has the second highest staff ERA at 5.03.
DRIVE TIME: West Virginia will face Greenville seven times this season after meeting eight times in 2012. The Power and Drive split their series last year with each team sweeping four-game sets at their home parks. The clubs have squared off 44 times since 2005 and the all-time series is split at 22 wins apiece. Greenville does hold a 15-9 edge at Fluor Field, site of the nest three games in the match-up.
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 19: The Power will welcome two Los Angeles Laker cheerleaders and have a Jerry West East Bank High jersey giveaway on NBA night. This event is presented by WCHS-TV and Fox 11.
POWER POINTS: On Saturday, Dilson Herrera became the first Power player this season to score four runs in a game... Stetson Allie is the first player this season to hit two home runs in a single game, knocking two out of McCormick Field on Saturday night... Raul Fortunato has hit a three-run home run in each of his last to games... Seven miscues on Saturday night matched the Power record for errors in a single game (July 22, 2009 vs. SAV)...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 10-7 to complete a three game series sweep. The Pirates scored six in the eighth to take Phil Irwin off the hook in his MLB debut... Indianapolis knocked off Columbus 12-7... Altoona was doubled up by Harrisburg 4-2... Bradenton lost 8-2 to St. Lucie. Jose Osuna homered in the loss.
