Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 15, 2013) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators couldn't bounce back after giving up a four-run first inning, losing to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 8-4, on Monday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Shorebirds third baseman Joel Hutter went 4-5 at the plate, driving in a run in each of his first three plate appearances to pace Delmarva's offense.
Anthony Vega led off the game with a single, and Hutter brought him home two batters later with a double to left field. Christian Walker followed with an RBI-single, and Creede Simpson added a two-run home run (2) to cap the scoring for the frame.
Kannapolis got a run back in the bottom of the first when Rangel Ravelo grounded out to bring home Adam Heisler. Ravelo finished the night 2-3 with 2 RBI for Kannapolis.
The Shorebirds chased Intimidators starting pitcher Euclides Leyer from the game with two runs in the second inning as Torsten Boss doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an error, and Hutter added an RBI-single to cash Vega.
Leyer (1-1) finished the night after 1 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking two in a losing effort. Todd Kibby worked 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Ryan Bollinger and Joseph Dvorsky each tossed two scoreless innings for Kannapolis.
Brady Wager earned the win, working six innings allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Wager (1-1) avenged a loss to the Kannapolis in his previous start. Matt Price worked the final 1 1/3 innings for the save (3).
Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the third, Kannapolis crept within three when Ravelo singled to plate Micah Johnson and scored on a Wager throwing error making it 6-3 Delmarva.
Delmarva led 8-4 when reliever Williams Louico walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the eight, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs, but the 'Birds turned to Price to get out of the jam. He struck out Michael Johnson to end the threat, then worked a perfect ninth inning to slam the door on Kannapolis.
Kannapolis catcher Michael Marjama doubled in the first inning to hit safely in his 11th straight game, and Adam Heisler's two walks continued his 11-game on-base streak.
The Intimidators and Shorebirds play game two of three on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
