Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Greenville, NC- April 15, 2013)- The West Virginia Power beat the Greenville Drive 6-0 Monday evening at Fluor Field. Three Power pitchers combined for the team's first shutout this season and the offense capitalized on 10 walks for their West Virginia's third straight victory.
The Power took a 1-0 lead in the third without the benefit of a base hit. Francisco Diaz walked and moved to second when Junior Sosa followed with a free pass. A third consecutive walk loaded the bases. Dilson Herrera grounded to third and Nick Moore fielded the ball, stepped on the bag for the first out, and threw home. Diaz slid around the tag at the plate to put the Power ahead 1-0.
The first West Virginia hit came in the fourth inning. Walker Gourley hit a two-run home run with two outs to extend the lead to 3-0. The Power added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as well. After back-to-back walks, Josh Bell doubled in both Max Moroff and Herrera for a 5-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Diaz walked and scored on a single by Moroff to cap the scoring at 6-0.
Clay Holmes made his third start of the season and saw two base runners in each of the first two innings. After Jordan Weems reached on a single in the second, Holmes settled in to retire the next 13 batters in a row. Holmes (1-0) pitched five and third shutout innings, the longest outing of his professional career, and became the first Power starting pitcher to record a win this season. Drive starter Justin Haley (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on no hits and walking six over three and two-thirds. Josh Smith and Ryan Hafner combined to keep the shutout intact over the final three plus innings.
