Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC--The Tourists losing skid hit three Monday night when the Hickory Crawdads came to town for the first time this season. Asheville had some opportunities late, but the Crawdads made some timely plays and defeated the home team 6-3.
T.J. Oakes (1-1, 5.68) suffered his first defeat on the campaign after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings. Oakes had to leave the game in the fifth after being struck in the arm with a comeback line drive. On the other side of the mound, C.J. Edwards (1-1, 2.51) earned his first win by pitching five innings of three-hit ball. Edwards allowed just one run in the victory.
Asheville jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Jason Stolz's RBI single to center that scored Drew Beuerlein. The lead was short lived when in the top of the third, Joey Gallo blasted a tape measured two-run Homer over the center-field wall. Nick Williams made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the third, and Hickory tacked on two more in the forth with a Jorge Alfaro Home Run and a Joe Maloney RBI single.
Asheville made it interesting in the seventh and eighth innings however. Derek Jones scored on a fielder's choice and Jose Brecino crossed the plate on a wild pitch. With the game 5-3 to start the eighth, Matt Wessinger and Rosell Herrera hit back-to-back singles, bur with Beuerlein at the plate showing bunt, Wessinger was picked off second base. A strike-out and pop out later, the threat was ended.
The Tourists are now 6-6 on the season, the first time they have been .500 since opening day. Asheville will have an opportunity to jump back over .500 on Tuesday evening against Hickory with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
