THE LEADOFF: A strong start by Austin Coley and a four-run fifth gave the Power a 5-1 victory in the opening game of the series against the Greenville Drive on Monday. Coley went a career-best seven innings and struck out five en route to his single-season franchise-best 13th win of the year. With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fifth, the Power scored four runs, including a two-run single by Pablo Reyes that scored both Tyler Filliben and Tito Polo. Jordan Luplow followed with a single and a wild pitch moved both Reyes and Luplow into scoring position. The Power scored the final two runs on an infield single from Jerrick Suiter and a throwing error allowed Luplow to cross.
BET THEY CAN'T DRIVE STICK: For the first time this season, West Virginia will square off against the Greenville Drive, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Over the past 11 years the Power and Drive have battled only 56 times with West Virginia edging the all-time series 30-26. Last year, West Virginia went 4-1 against the Drive. Greenville is 17-20 in the second half and 5.5 games back in the Southern Division.
CAN I GET YOUR AUTOGRAPH?: Austin Coley became the all-time single-season wins leader in the history of the West Virginia Power with a career-best seven innings on Monday night. Coley is now in a three-way-tie for sixth place in wins during Charleston's tenure in the South Atlantic League with Tim Sossamon from the 1987 Charleston Wheelers and Cedric Allen from the 1995 Charleston Alley Cats. John Ray from the 1991 Wheelers has the most wins at 16. Coley is scheduled to start Saturday in Asheville.
CRAZY GOOD "D": West Virginia's defense has committed only 26 errors in 37 games of the second half. Of the 37 games, 18 saw the Power go a full game without a miscue. The Power have committed only 96 errors, the second fewest in the league and ahead of only the Hickory Crawdads (94).
TARP TIME: West Virginia goes for its fifth win of the homestand tonight with LHP Stephen Tarpley on the hill. The left hander is 8-2 with a 2.26 ERA and is making his first start of the year against the Drive. Last year, Tarpley faced the Red Sox' short-season affiliate in Lowell twice and allowed one run over 15.0 innings including eight shutout innings in his last start as a member of the Orioles organization.
HOME SWEET HOME: West Virginia has more home wins and fewer home losses than any other club in the South Atlantic League this season. The Power are 37-19 at home and average 4.7 runs per game at Appalachian Power Park this season. West Virginia is 26-24 on the road and averages 4.3 runs per game on the road.
MONEYBALL: Tito Polo is currently riding an 18-game on-base streak, a season best for the first-year Power outfielder. Polo's streak began prior to his participation in the Pan-Am games on June 25, though the 20-year-old has not played in a game since Friday. Polo is also on a six game hit-streak and is hitting .346 (9-for-26) since July 25.
PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 5: The Power are hosting its final Pets in the Park of 2015 on Wednesday. Fans can bring their ballpark-friendly pets to enjoy the series finale against the Greenville Drive.
