Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, WV - "Better late than never" was an apropos saying for the Greenville Drive on Tuesday night, as some outstanding late-game efforts allowed the Drive to log a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the Northern Division-leading West Virginia Power.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Drive (18-20, 56-52) catcher David Sopilka untied the game with a solo home run to left field off Power (26-12, 62-44) reliever John Sever (3-3), his first long ball of the season.
Kuehl McEachern (6-2) logged the victory after throwing four scoreless innings of relief for the Drive while punching out four West Virginia hitters. He stranded the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth by getting Jordan Luplow to pop up to end the game.
The Power struck first with single runs in the first two innings against Greenville starter Ben Taylor. Tito Polo singled to begin the first, and following a walk by Luplow, the two pulled off a double steal. Michael Suchy then grounded out to short to plate Polo.
In the second, the Power began the inning with three consecutive singles, with the third a line drive to right by Taylor Gushue to score Elvis Escobar.
Taylor bounced back from the first two innings to provide the Drive with a solid outing, giving up just the two runs over five innings with four strikeouts.
The Drive finally got to Power starter Stephen Tarpley for two runs in the fifth. Deiner Lopez hit a one-out single, swiped second, and came home on an RBI single by Yoan Moncada. Michael Chavis followed with a game-tying double on a liner to right field.
Tarpley struck out eight Greenville hitters over six innings in a no-decision.
The rubber game of the series begins at 7:05 PM on Wednesday night in West Virginia. LH Dedgar Jimenez (6-7, 3.93) takes the mound for the Drive, and the Power will start RH Yeudy Garcia (10-5, 2.00).
