Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 4, 2015) - The Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, have promoted right-handed pitcher Yency Almonte to the Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem Dash today. Almonte is 8-4 with a 3.88 ERA (40 ER/92.2 IP) and 71 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts) for the Intimidators this season. In a corresponding move, the Intimidators receive left-handed pitcher Zack Erwin, who played collegiately at Clemson University, from the Advanced Rookie Great Falls Voyagers.

Almonte, 21, is coming off the best month of his career, going 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA (8 ER/32.2 IP) and 24 strikeouts in five starts in July. The Miami native opened the month by taking a no-hitter two outs into the ninth inning at Augusta on July 4 in what became the longest start of his career - 8 and 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to pitch Kannapolis to a shutout win. For his effort, Almonte earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors for June 29-July 5. He is two starts removed from striking out a career-high seven batters over six innings on July 23 at Greensboro. Almonte made an appearance for the Dash at the end of the First Half, tossing seven innings and giving up two unearned runs to earn a win over Lynchburg on June 20 in the completion of a suspended game from June 2. The White Sox acquired Almonte in February from the Los Angeles Angels as the player to be named later in the trade for Gordon Beckham. Los Angeles originally drafted Almonte in the 17th round of the June 2012 draft.

Erwin, 21, is the first member of the White Sox 2015 draft class to join Kannapolis. He is 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA (2 ER/21.1 IP) in eight games (four starts) for Great Falls. The White Sox selected Erwin in the fourth round (112th overall) in the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Clemson where he went 7-4 with a 3.04 ERA (36 ER/106.2 IP) and 92 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts) this season for the Tigers.
