(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Augusta GreenJackets held on for a 16-14 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night. Each team had 22 hits in in the game, a season high for both.
The Legends were down 16-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning but scored three in the eighth on a three-run homer by Lexington native Anderson Miller, and came back with seven in the ninth inning, including a three-run homer by Chase Vallot with two outs and two strikes.
Each team scored four runs in the first inning, when Augusta hit two of its five home runs. Johneshwy Fargas and Will Callaway drew walks to start the game. Fargas stole third base and after Aramis Garcia struck out, Skyler Ewing's sacrifice fly brought Fargas home. Dylan Davis hit a two-run homer, and Jonah Arenado followed with a solo shot, and the GreenJackets had a four-run lead.
The Legends tied the game in the bottom of the first with run-scoring hits by Miller, Samir Duenez and Vallot. The single by Duenez was the first of his five hits in the game. A fourth run scored when a ground ball hit by Luis Valenzuela got past shortstop Evan Potter for an error.
Augusta took command with five runs in the second inning, three coming on Dylan Davis' second home run of the game. The GreenJackets added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and Andrew Cain hit a three run homer in the seventh to give Augusta a 15-4 margin. Garcia's leadoff homer in the eighth inning made the score 16-4 before the Legends began their comeback.
Miller's three-run shot came with two outs in the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Valenzuela led off with a double. He moved to third after Logan Davis flied out to right field. DonAndre Clark singled, scoring Valenzuela, and Michael Hill doubled to right field, sending Clark to third. After Chad Johnson walked to load the bases, Wander Franco singled, scoring Clark and Hill. Miller struck out for the second out, but Duenez singled to right field, loading the bases again. A passed ball allowed Johnson to score, and the Legends trailed 16-11. With two runners on, Vallot homered, and the score was 16-14. Reliever Carlos Diaz entered the game and got the final out when Arenado made a diving stop at third and threw Valenzuela out at first.
The Legends left 12 men on base, the GreenJackets 13. Garcia and Arenado each had four hits for Augusta, and Cain had three hits and four RBI. Every Augusta batter had at least two hits, except for Ewing, who was 1-for-4, and Potter, who was 0-for-5.
Miller and Vallot each had four RBI for Lexington. Miller, Johnson and Vallot each had three hits, and every Legends batter had at least one hit.
Dusten Knight (7-1), who entered the game at the start of the second inning, got the win after working five and one-third shutout innings. He allowed six hits, struck out eight batters and walked none.
