CHARLESTON, SC -- Southpaw Chase Wright fired a season-best eight innings of two-hit baseball and Marcos Vechionacci doubled home the go-ahead run as the Charleston RiverDogs chased the Asheville Tourists, 2-1, in South Atlantic League action Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Wright retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced and improved his record to 6-3. He struck out seven Tourists and walked four and nearly balanced his groundouts to flyouts, 8-to-7. Wright got ninth inning help from closer Mike Martinez, who picked up his league-leading 25th save in 26 attempts and his first in two weeks. Martinez faced only three batters and allowed one hit, and was saved when catcher Irwil Rojas threw out Matt Miller who attempted to steal second with one out in the ninth.

The victory upped the RiverDogs' second half record to 13-10 and 56-36 overall while the Tourists slipped to 10-14 in the second half and 48-45 overall. Charleston is now 16-11 in one-run games, 30-18 at home, 40-31 in night games and 6-6 on Mondays.

Asheville took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when catcher Nelson Robledo hit a sacrifice fly to center field and scored Dustin Hahn, who led off the frame with a single to right and moved to third after two consecutive walks.

The RiverDogs retaliated in the bottom of the third with their lone runs on the night. Leadoff batter Mario Holmann grounded into a 4-6-3 double play and Edwar Gonzalez scored on the play. Charleston added the go-ahead run two batters later when Vechionacci doubled to right field and scored Ryan Haag, who had previously singled up the middle, moved to second when Rod Allen was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on the double play.

Asheville's Jarrett Grube suffered the loss, dropping his seasonal mark to 5-3. In the process, Grube pitched six complete innings, allowed two runs on four hits, walked one batter and fanned six. He was relieved by Darric Merrell in the seventh and Adam Bright pitched the eighth.

Game Three of the four-game series continues Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as lefty Abel Gomez (1-1) takes the hill for Charleston while righty Samuel Deduno (6-5) gets the call for Asheville. Game Four will be on Wednesday afternoon with a rare 12:05 p.m. start.
