Lake County Captains News Release
(Salisbury, MD)-Delmarva catcher Juan Gutierrez singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning Monday night, as the Shorebirds nipped the Captains 4-3 at Perdue Stadium for their fifth consecutive win.
Gutierrez rolled an RBI single to right off Kyle Collins (4-5) in the bottom of the eighth. Gutierrez knocked in Jason Fransz, who singled to lead off the inning. Fransz went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a single by Pat Scalabrini. Gutierrez followed with the base hit to right to snap a 3-3 tie.
The first-place Shorebirds (18-6) have won five straight, including three in a row over the Captains, who fell a season-worst eight games out of first place in the SAL North. The Captains (10-14) are just 2-8 at Perdue Stadium this year.
Shorebirds righthander Justin Henington (2-0) earned the win by recording the final four outs. He came on in the eighth with the bases loaded and the score tied 3-3, and induced Brian Finegan to ground out to end the inning. After that, he worked a perfect ninth.
The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Chris Gimenez. The Shorebirds took a 3-1 lead in the second against Aaron Laffey, who worked the first five innings. The Captains tied it 3-3 on sacrifice fly by Chad Longworth in the third and another RBI single by Gimenez in the fifth.
The Captains left 11 runners on base in the game.
The Captains will wrap up the series and road trip on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 (WELW AM 1330).
