Bombers miss opportunities, lose, 2-1

GREENVILLE, SC - Greenville outhit Hickory Monday night, 9-5. However, the Bombers stranded 14 baserunners, a staggering 12 of them in scoring position, as the Hickory Crawdads snuck away with a 2-1 victory at Municipal Stadium.

The loss broke the Bombers three-game win streak, dropping their second-half record to 12-11.

Jarrett Gardner (1-7) pitched more than well enough to snap a six-game personal streak, allowing two runs over six innings, however a trio of Hickory pitchers combined to keep the Bombers bats silent when it counted most. Greeenville went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Hickory claimed the lead in the second inning on A.J. Johnson's sixth home run of the year, a solo blast to left field. The Bombers evened the score in the third inning on Jeff Corsaletti's homer to right field. Corsaletti continued his torrid hitting, going 3-for-5 to extend his hit streak to 14 games.

The Crawdads seesawed back ahead against Gardner in the seventh. Neil Walker opened the frame with a line double to the right center field gap. Anthony Bocchino then laced a double into the right field corner, scoring Walker with what proved to be the winning run.

Greenville would go on the leave the tying run at third base in the seventh inning against righthander Kyle Pearson (2-9), who pitched three and two-third shutout relief frames to earn the win. The Bombers also stranded two runners in the eighth as Derek Drage came on to retire John Otness for the final out of the inning on a fly ball run down deep in the right field corner by Antonio Sucre.

Pearson then pitched a perfect night to notch his second save of the season.

The clubs meet in game three of the series on Tuesday at 7:05pm. Righthanders Beau Vaughan (0-2) for Greenville and Yoann Torrealba (2-3) for Hickory will pitch.

NOTES: Crawdads manager JEFF BRANSON was ejected by plate umpire CHAD McDONALD in the sixth inning.....Rhp JESUS DELGADO fired 3 perfect relief innings for Greenville. In his last 6 appearances, Delgado has allowed just 1 run over 14 innings with 2 walks and 21 strikeouts .....C SALVADOR PANIAGUA went 1-for-3 with a walk to run his hit streak to 6 games.....Lf CLAUDIO ARIAS went 1-for-5 to extend his streak to 5 games......Wednesday's homestand finale vs. the Crawdads will feature a 12:05pm gametime.....
