Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (July 18, 2005) - The West Virginia Power went 5-1 on their six game road trip and returned home to Appalachian Power Park with hopes of extending their season long four game winning streak. The Hagerstown Suns prevented that from happening with an 8-2 victory over the Power on Monday night.
Jim Burt delivered a two out, two run single in the top of the first inning to give the Suns a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning the Power answered with back-to-back solo homeruns from Ryan Braun and Grant Richardson to tie the game at 2-2. The Suns scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull away. Russ Triplett knocked in the first run on an RBI double. A few batters later, Carlos Gomez hit a ground ball to Hernan Iribarren at second base, but Iribarren booted the ball and the error allowed a pair of runs to score. Ambiorix Concepcion capped the four run inning with an RBI single to make it 6-2 Suns. The Suns finished off the Power in the top of the ninth inning when Mike Carp hit a two run homer, his second in as many days.
Mike Devaney (6-1) earned the victory, Joe Serfass (2) earned the save and Greg Kloosterman (3-13) obtained the loss. The Power are 12-12 in the second half after the loss and the Suns move to 9-15 with the win.
The Power will conclude the four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. The Power will throw right-handed pitcher Josh Baker (1-4, 6.79) and the Suns will counter with right-handed pitcher Blake Eager (4-3, 4.02). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
