Columbus Catfish News Release
COLUMBUS, GAâ¹The Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Catfish in both ends of a doubleheader tonight at Golden Park, winning 7-2 in the first game of the doubleheader and beating the Catfish 2-1 in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Fish have lost four straight games and drop back to one-game under the .500 mark at 11-12 in the second half (39-52 overall), while Kannapolis improves to a SAL-Southern Division best 14-9 (50-42 overall).
In the first game of the doubleheader, Kannapolis never trailed, scoring runs in the first four innings to top the Fish 7-2. Kannapolis scored two unearned runs in the first inning off spot starter LHP Chad Bailey. Two Catfish errors led to a run in the first inning. The Fish got a run back in the first, but Kannapolis scored two more runs in the second and another in the third against Bailey. LHP Liam O¹Flaherty tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen for the Catfish tonight, allowing two runs in relief, but the Catfish never responded offensively. 2B Travis Denker and C Chris Westervelt each had two hits for the Fish in the loss.
In the nightcap, RHP Chris Malone allowed a solo HR to Kannapolis LF Bernie Gonzalez in the second inning but settled in to shut down the Intimidators the rest of the way. Malone allowed just one run on five hits in six innings, striking out six. The Fish were hitless against Intimidators starter LHP Ray Liotta until the fourth inning, but were able to scratch out a run on an RBI groundout by Westervelt to tie the game at one in the sixth.
Despite loading the bases in the seventh with the winning run at third and one out, the Fish could not score and gave up the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth on a Gonzalez fielder¹s choice. 3B Blake DeWitt had two hits in the nightcap. The Catfish send RHP Zach Hammes (3-4, 4.50 ERA) to the hill tomorrow at 7:00 PM in the third game of the series against the Intimidators.
