BlueClaws offense continues to struggle

Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (10-14) dropped their second game in a row losing to the Lexington Legends (13-11), Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, 5-2 on Monday night. Lakewood out hit the Legends 12-8 but went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The BlueClaws were blanked through the first six innings before plating a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the led to 5-1. Lakewood had the bases loaded with two outs and Doug Gredvig at the plate. The Legends relief pitcher Ryan Thompson was called for a balk to bring in the BlueClaws first run of the game.

Lakewood added a run in the eighth inning when Sam Orr connected for a one-out solo homer to right field to cut the lead to 5-2. It was Orr's 12th homer of the year and finished the night 3-for-4 along with a pair of base hits.

Lakewood tried to rally in the sixth trailing 5-0 but had two runners thrown out at home. Gredvig led off the inning with a base hit then was thrown out at home trying to score on Jason Jaramillo's double for the first out of the inning. Orr followed up with a base hit moving Jaramillo up to third then Chris Klemm popped out to right field. Jaramillo tried to tag and score but was thrown out at home by left-fielder Hunter Pence for the inning ending double-play.

Lexington took an early 3-0 lead in the fourth. Edwin Maysonet led off the inning drawing a walk then Hunter Pence followed up with a base hit to put runners on first and third. Ole Sheldon followed up with a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field to plate Maysonet for the first run of the game.

J.R. Towles followed up with an RBI double to plate Pence to give Lexington a 2-0 lead. Then with two outs in the inning Beu Torbert capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI double plating Towles from second and give Lexington a 3-0 lead.

Nate Johnson (7-5) took the loss allowing three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three over five innings. It was Johnson's second loss in four starts with two of the starts recording a no-decision.

Cory Duiett gave the BlueClaws offense a chance to get back in the game pitching three perfect innings. Duiett pitched the final three frames retiring all nine batters in a row with two strikeouts.

Josh Paddock pitched the sixith inning in relief allowing two runs on two hits.

Lakewood wraps up their series and home stand with the Legends on Tuesday night. Lakewood will send right-hander Maximo De La Cruz (4-8, 4.92) to the mound while Lexington will counter with right-hander Chad Reineke (6-5, 4.42). First pitch on Tuesday night is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
