Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS. - Brandon Woodruff returned to his home state and locked down the Mississippi Braves over seven innings on Tuesday night at MGM Park, as the Biloxi Shuckers took down their intrastate rival, 7-1. Milwaukee Brewers' rehabbing right-fielder Domingo Santana (1x2, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB) homered in the first inning to spark the offense. Tuesday night's victory moves Biloxi (30-31) to 12 games over .500 at home, with a 19-7 mark. The Shuckers are now 3-1 on the homestand and winners of three-straight, staying one game back in the South Division standings.
Santana (1x2, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB) made the first start of his three rehab games with the Shuckers and made an immediate impact with the bat, blasting a line drive over the wall in left in the bottom of the first to give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi (22-29) responded quickly with a run in the first. After back-to-back singles by Dustin Peterson and Carlos Franco opened the frame, consecutive groundouts by Willians Astudillo and Jacob Schrader plated Peterson to tie the game at one apiece.
The tie would not last long, as Biloxi's bats tallied two runs in each of the next three innings to open up a 7-1 lead over it's the M-Braves.
Nick Shaw (2x4, R, 3B, 2 RBI) drilled a one-out, RBI triple to the warning track in right to bring home Jacob Nottingham (2x3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) from first in the third inning. A walk to Javier Betancourt (1x3, BB) put runners on the corners for Woodruff, who's RBI single scored Shaw from third to give the Shuckers a two-run lead.
That margin would be plenty for Woodruff (1-2) on the mound, as the right-hander did not allow a hit over his final five innings, but did issue two free passes to Johan Camargo and Dansby Swanson with two outs in the third, and walked Dian Toscano to start the fifth. The former Mississippi State Bulldog cruised through his team-high seven innings in his first ever start at MGM Park, giving up just one run on two hits, four walks and four strikeouts on 78 pitches (53 strikes).
Nottingham added a two-run shot, his fifth of the season, in the third to give Biloxi a 5-1 advantage. An RBI walk to Victor Roache (0x3, RBI, BB) and a run-scoring single by Shaw in the fourth opened the game up to a six-run lead in the fourth.
Tristan Archer worked the final two frames for Biloxi, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Andrew Thurman (0-5) took the loss for Mississippi, lasting just three innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Shuckers will look to tie their longest home winning streak in game two on Wednesday night at MGM Park. RHP Adrian Houser (2-5, 6.65) takes the mound for Biloxi, while RHP Chris Ellis (6-2, 3.00) toes the rubber for Mississippi. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:50 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
