MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 23 through 29. The Jackson Generals swept the weekly awards as lefthander Ryan Yarbrough was selected as Pitcher of the Week, while rightfielder Tyler O'Neill earned Player of the Week honors.
Generals lefty Ryan Yarbrough was absolutely dominant over a pair of starts last week, tossing 13 innings of two-run ball, only one of which was earned. The southpaw from Lakeland, Florida went 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA, 9 hits allowed, two walks and 13 strikeouts. Yarbrough held his opponents to a .191 batting average while producing a 0.85 WHIP over the week. His first outing came in Jackson's 7-0 victory over North Division rival Chattanooga on May 23, where he fired seven frames of shutout baseball, holding Lookouts batters to just three hits and no walks, while fanning seven. Yarbrough continued his excellent week with six quality innings on May 29. Leading the Generals to a 6-2 win in Montgomery, the Old Dominion product struck out six Biscuits, allowing just two runs on six hits.
Tyler O'Neill has been at or near the top of most major offensive categories this season. His torrid 2016 campaign continued last week as he was named to his first Southern League Player of the Week award. O'Neill drove in at least one run in each of his seven games played, while pacing his Jackson club to a 6-1 record and a 7.5 game lead in the North Division. The Maple Ridge, British Columbia native went .333 at the plate with four runs, eight hits, six extra-base hits, 17 total bases, four doubles, a triple, a homerun and a league-leading 11 RBI. Furthermore, O'Neill walked six times, producing a .438 on-base percentage, .708 slugging and OPS of 1.146. His biggest performance of the week came in the Generals 10-1 win at Montgomery on May 27, going 3-for-4 with a run, two doubles and three RBI.
