Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but came up just one run shy, falling to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 6-5 at Hank Aaron Stadium on Tuesday night. Down four runs to begin the ninth inning, the BayBears were down to their final out but fought to put up three runs and put the tying and winning runs on base. Ultimately the Blue Wahoos recorded the final out, stranding the tying run at second base to drop the BayBears in the series opener.

Pensacola (31-20) struck first on the night when Brandon Dixon muscled out a solo home run in the top of the second inning. The early long ball was just the beginning of a productive night for the Blue Wahoos' second baseman. Dixon would hit another home run, a two run shot in the sixth inning and then again in the eighth inning, he drove in two more runs with a single. Dixon finished the game going 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBI for Pensacola.

Mobile (22-29) took a one run lead after posting two runs in the bottom of the second inning with RBI base hits from Kevin Cron and BayBears starting RHP Taylor Clarke to make the score 2-1 in favor of Mobile.

The score remained in Mobile's favor until Dixon struck again in the top of the sixth with his two run homer to put Pensacola up 3-2.

Clarke (0-1) pitched well in his Double-A debut but was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits, issuing zero walks and striking out four in 5.2 innings of work.

Down 6-2 in the ninth inning, Gabriel Guerrero stood in the batters box as the BayBears last hope. The right fielder hit out a solo shot to left, his sixth homer of the season that put Mobile back within three runs. Ronnie Freeman followed with a single and then scored when Cron reached second on a dropped ball in center field. Stewart Ijames followed with a RBI double to score Cron as the BayBears trailed 6-5. Cody Regis walked to put runners at first and second but Evan Marzilli popped out to short to end the game.

With the loss, the BayBears now sit at nine games back of first place in the Southern League South Division with 19 games left to play in the first half of the season before the All-Star Break.

The BayBears and Blue Wahoos continue their series on Wednesday night with first pitch set for 6:35 PM. Gates will open at 6:00 PM. The series last through Saturday, June 4th. Fans can purchase tickets for the current homestand at Hank Aaron Stadium or any of the BayBears remaining 44 home games.
