Mississippi Braves News Release
Biloxi, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers chased Mississippi starter Andrew Thurman after just three innings, pulling away to a 7-1 win on Tuesday night at MGM Park to open a five-game series.
With the game tied 1-1 in the second, Jacob Nottingham singled and Nick Shaw tripled him home to break the tie and put the Shuckers (30-21) ahead for good. Starter Brandon Woodruff (1-2) singled on the infield to plate Shaw and make it 3-1.
In the third, Nick Ramirez led off with a single and Nottingham hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run homer to make it 5-1.
That ended the day for Thurman (0-5), who allowed five runs on seven hits over three frames for the Braves (22-29), striking out two, walking two and allowing two home runs.
Danny Burawa came on in the fourth and got the first two outs quickly, but walked four straight batters to bring home a run. He left for reliever Steve Kent, who gave up a knock to Shaw to bring home another run for a 7-1 lead, but Nottingham was thrown out at the plate by Lipka to end the inning. It was Lipka's league-leading eighth outfield assist.
Mississippi managed just two hits off Woodruff, who picked up the win, striking out four and walking four while allowing just a run.
Biloxi got on the board in the first on a Domingo Santana solo home run, his first at-bat as part of a three-game major league rehab.
Mississippi tied the game in the second. Dustin Peterson and Carlos Franco got back-to-back singles. Willians Astudillo grounded out to the pitcher to move runners to second and third, and Peterson scored on a Jacob Schrader groundout to short to tie the game 1-1.
Kent, Mauricio Cabrera, Bradley Roney and Stephen Janas combined over the final 4 1/3 innings to hold the Shuckers scoreless. Biloxi sent Tristan Archer to the hill for the final two innings, keeping the Braves off the bases in a non-save role.
The Braves and Shuckers continue the series on Wednesday night at 7:10 PM CT at MGM Park, with right-hander Chris Ellis (6-2, 3.00) scheduled to take the hill against right-hander Adrian Houser (2-5, 6.65).
