GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---The Chicago Wolves gained an early lead and never lost it, grabbing a 5-3 victory against the Grand Rapids Griffins at the Van Andel Arena Saturday night. Forwards Spencer Machacek (G, 2A), Michael Davies (G, A), Darren Haydar (G, A) and Jared Ross (3A) notched multiple points, while Andre Deveaux and Andrew Kozek also potted goals for the Wolves. Chicago (24-19-2-3) opened scoring 7:18 into the game when Machacek took a feed from Ross in the slot and fired a shot past Grand Rapids goaltender Joey MacDonald, top shelf. The Wolves doubled their lead, 2-0, when Kozek grabbed the puck at the doorstep and flicked it over MacDonald, 5:13 into the second period. Grand Rapids (20-21-1-4) defenseman Travis Ehrhardt redirected the puck behind Chicago netminder Drew MacIntyre to bring the Griffins within one, 2-1, 7:31 into the middle frame. Chicago responded just over a minute later when Davies wrapped around the net and slid the puck across the goal line to boost Chicago's lead to 3-1. Forward Ilari Filppula redirected the puck into the empty side of the net on the power-play to bring the Griffins back within one, 3-2, 12:56 into the second frame. The Wolves brought the score to 4-2, with a power-play marker from Deveaux when the forward redirected defenseman Paul Postma's shot over MacDonald, 7:34 into the last period. MacDonald (10-9-1) posted 18 saves for Grand Rapids. Haydar one-timed a feed from Davies into the empty side of the net at 10:14 of the final frame to make Chicago's lead 5-3. The Griffins rounded out scoring at 5-3 when Filppula fired a shot from the right faceoff circle past MacIntyre, glove side. MacIntyre (7-4-1) stopped 35 of 38 shots in his third straight win. The Wolves return to the Allstate Arena to face the Oklahoma City Barons on Sunday at 3 p.m.
