Devils Fall To First-Place Penguins

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Albany Devils struck first, but the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins answered with a strong second period, lifting them to a 6-2 victory Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Patrick Davis and Adam Henrique found the back of the net for the Devils, who are now 17-22-0-3. The first-place Penguins improve their record to 33-10-0-0.

Albany was in search for its first-ever win against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and got off to the right start. Davis notched his third goal of the season on a play setup by Louis Robitaille at 2:43 of the first. The Devils weathered the storm for the next 16 minutes, but Brett Sterling broke through to even things with 56 seconds remaining in the period.

In the second, the Penguins increased their lead with goals from Geoff Walker (5:52), Keven Veilleux (14:48) and Nick Johnson (16:55, PP). The club then established a five-goal lead in the third with tallies from Corey Potter (8:39) and Sterling again (9:56).

Henrique concluded the scoring with a power-play goal at 16:49. Jacob Josefson and Matt Anderson had the helpers.

Mike McKenna was busy in goal, making 39 saves on 45 shots.

For Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Brad Thiessen got the start and made two saves in 8:19 of play before John Curry entered the game and finished with 19 stops on 20 shots.

Next up, the Devils travel to Bridgeport on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
