Sabres Recall Ellis And Byron From Portland

BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today that forwards Matt Ellis and Paul Byron been recalled from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.

This will be the second recall of the season for Ellis, who played six games for the Sabres from Nov. 6-17. Ellis (6'1", 213 lbs., 8/31/1981) sits fourth in team scoring with 28 points (8+20) in 40 games, and also serves as the team's captain. Ellis has 25 points (10+15) in 123 games with Buffalo over the past three seasons, including a career-high 13 points in 72 games last season. Buffalo claimed Ellis off waivers from Los Angeles on October 1, 2008.

Currently in his second pro season, this is the first NHL recall of Byron's career. Byron (5'9", 170 lbs., 4/27/1989) is second on the Pirates in scoring with 31 points (14+17) in 43 games, including a team-leading seven PPG. The Ottawa, Ont.-native has 64 points (26+38) in 100 career AHL games with Portland. Byron was selected by the Sabres in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2007 Entry Draft, after playing three years with Gatineau of the QMJHL.
