'Wolves Take Down Aeros With Comeback Win

The SeaWolves mounted an eighth inning comeback Thursday night at Canal Park, taking down the Akron Aeros 5-4. The win for Erie puts them in a first place tie with Akron in the Southern Division.

Akron struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Asdrubal Cabrera singled and scored with two outs on a Brian Barton double down the right field line giving the Aeros a 1-0 lead.

The Aeros extended their lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Barton led of the inning with single for his second hit of the game. Jon Van Every followed with a base hit to put runners at first and second for Ryan Goleski. Goleski singled to left and Barton scored on the play, Van Every would be thrown out trying to score for the first out of the inning. With two outs, Wyatt Toregas singled home Goleski for a 3-0 Akron lead.

Erie finally cut into the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Jackson Melian, Matt Joyce and Mike Hollimon each singled with one out and Melian scored on the Hollimon hit, cutting the Akron lead down to two at 3-1.

Akron would add a run in the top of the eighth with two outs. Trevor Crowe reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. He got to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch, putting the Aeros back on top by three runs at 4-1.

The SeaWolves big inning came in the top of the eighth. Nick McIntyre led off and reached first on an error by Pat Osborn at third base. Clete Thomas was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Andres Torres. Torres singled to load the bases for Kody Kirkland. Kirkland doubled to deep right field, over the head of Crowe, scoring McIntyre and Thomas, putting the score at 4-3. The Aeros went to the bullpen and brought in Mariano Gomez. With runners on second and third, Gomez struck out the first two batters he faced bringing Joyce to the plate. Joyce worked the count to 2-2 and hit a laser passed Jordan Brown at first bringing home Torres and Kirkland for the 'Wolves first lead of the game at 5-4.

Matt Rusch came into the game in the eighth in relief of Eddie Bonine and struck out a pair while retiring the side in order. In the bottom of the ninth, Rusch gave up a leadoff single to Osborn putting the tying run aboard for Akron. The Aeros sent in a pinch runner at first in Rodney Choy Foo with Wyatt Toregas at the plate. Toregas lined out to center and Thomas made a perfect strike to first to double up Choy Foo for a double play. Rusch then struck out Argenis Reyes for the final out of the game. The save for Rusch was his first on the season.

Bonine (3-1) went seven innings for Erie allowing four runs off of eight hits. He walked one and struck out two in picking up his third win of the season.

Akron starter Aaron Laffey went seven-plus innings and was charged with all five Erie runs, two earned. The SeaWolves gave Laffey his first loss of the year.

The comeback win was the second for Erie in the last week. The other came against Reading last Thursday at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie and Akron meet in game two of a four-game set Friday night at Canal Park...7:05 first pitch. LHP Jon Connolly (1-2, 4.56 ERA) looks for his second consecutive win and goes up against LHP Scott Lewis (0-1, 3.04 ERA).
