August 10, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves trailed late on Sunday to the Reading Phillies, only to rally to a 3-2 victory in a thrilling game at First Energy Stadium to complete a four-game sweep. The âWolves have now won a season-best six straight games and the club improved to 18-8 following the all-star break.
The Phillies struck first in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Luke French. Brad Harman walked with one out and was doubled over to third by Greg Golson. Harman scored on an infield single by Jeremy Slayden to make it 1-0 Reading.
The R-Phils added to the lead in the bottom of the third. Jovan Moran led off with a walk and on a ground ball by Harman was retired at second. On an errant throw by shortstop Will Rhymes into the seats, Harman reached second. Golson singled to put runners on the corners. Golson stole second for his 20th steal of the season. After a Slayden strikeout, Neil Sellers walked to load the bases. A wild pitch would bring Harman home to score, giving Reading a 2-0 advantage.
The SeaWolves cut into the Reading lead in the top of the fifth against Reading starter Adam Eaton. Pedro Cotto lined a double down the right field line with one out and he came in to score on a Rhymes single through the right side, making it a 2-1 game in favor of Reading.
The âWolves then battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Shawn Roof blooped a single into right for his second hit of the game. That would be the last batter Eaton faced in the game as the Phils made the call to the pen to bring in the lefty Sergio Escalona to face the left-handed hitting Rhymes. Rhymes laced a double over the head of the centerfielder Golson, scoring Roof from first, making it a 2-2 game.
The SeaWolves would take their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Wilkin Ramirez led off and crushed his 19th home run of the season. The solo-shot gave the SeaWolves a 3-2 advantage. It was the fourth home run for Ramirez in the last three games.
Five relief pitchers combined to shutout the Phillies over the final 4.2 innings of the game for the 3-2 win. Rudy Darrow picked up his third save of the season and second in as many days striking out the final two batters of the game, preserving the win.
Josh Kite (1-0) picked up the win going 1.1 innings, allowing two hits with no strikeouts and a walk.
The âWolves finished the season series with Reading winning 11 of the 13 meetings.
Erie has now hit 21 home run in the last seven games and the comeback was Erie's fifth when trailing after six innings.
