Smith's 10th inning HR lifts Fisher Cats to 5-4 win over Mets

Binghamton, NY- J.P. Arencibia hit a game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth inning, David Smith ripped a solo homer in the top of the 10th inning and Orlando Roman worked out of a bases-loaded, no out situation in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the New Hampshire Fisher Cats a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Binghamton Mets on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

New Hampshire (53-69) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Smith's sacrifice fly off Tobi Stoner that plated Chris Gutierrez (2-for-5, BB, R), who led off the game with a single.

Binghamton (63-60) tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second inning against Marty McLeary when Salomon Manriquez (3-for-3, BB, R) singled, advanced to third on a Shawn Bowman (2-for-4, SAC) single and scored on a Josh Petersen (0-for-5, RBI) fielder's choice ground out.

Ryan Patterson (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, R) slammed a two-out, two-run homer, his 16th, off Mets' reliever Edgar Alfonzo in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Fisher Cats a 3-1 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Caleb Stewart (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, R) blasted a three-run home run, his 11th, off Seth Overbey to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.

New Hampshire forced extra innings when Arencibia (1-for-1, HR, RBI, R) laced a pinch-hit home run -the first in franchise history- off Casey Hoorelbeke in the top of the ninth inning, tying the game, 4-4.

Leading off the top of the 10th inning, Smith (2-for-4, HR, SF, 2 RBI, R) took losing pitcher Tim Lavigne (2-5) over the right-centerfield wall for his 11th home run, giving the Fisher Cats a 5-4 lead.

The Mets threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Roman struck out Salvador Paniagua (0-for-1) and Bowman before inducing a game-ending fielder's choice grounder from Petersen.

Daryl Harang (4-5) worked one-third of an inning to claim the victory, walking three and fanning one.

Roman worked a scoreless inning for his first Fisher Cats' save.

Following an off day on Monday, the Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday night, August 12, at 6:05pm with a doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators. Right-hander Mike MacDonald (0-2, 4.50) attempts to earn a Fisher Cats' franchise-record 17th career victory in game one against Senators' right-hander Jordan Zimmerman (6-2, 3.29). In game two, Jean Machi (1-5, 5.57) will take the mound for New Hampshire against Harrisburg left-hander Justin Jones (2-3, 5.34). Radio coverage begins at 5:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
